Robbie Shakespeare, one half of the powerhouse rhythm duo of Sly and Robbie, has died. Shakespeare had reportedly been ailing for some time and had undergone surgery related to his kidneys.
A key architect in reggae bass lines dominate the form and beyond with his work being the spine of so many classics from U-Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott, Augustus Pablo, Yellowman and Black Uhuru. His production work also extended beyond the reggae genre, covering various pop and rock artists such as Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Cocker, Yoko Ono, Serge Gainsbourg and Grace Jones.
